‘A Future That He Is’ – Featuring: ColdKid Presented by: Sparx Entertainment
SPARX: Tattoos can tell a lot about someone and what they mean to the person who has them. You especially have an assortment of tattoos, do any of them hold meanings for your life or music career?
ColdKid: I’d say almost every one of my tattoos holds a meaning to it. I started getting tattoos as a way of telling my story and expressing my true self. I wear some tattoos as scars and others as a reminder for good memories. Probably my most meaningful being the “Struggle” across my knuckles. It really ties in with my music and the way I was brought up. I’ve learned that no matter how rich or poor, we all struggle in some way. It’s important to learn from your struggle and overcome it than to hide or avoid it. A lot of people ask why I tatted my face up, and I tell them it’s because I don’t want a normal career path. I knew the consequences of doing so, and so that reminds me to maintain my grind twice as hard. Society wanna tell me I can’t that my face and make a living, well I’m here to kill that stigma.
SPARX: This may not be a part of the idea [laughs], it’s obvious that your style and bad-boy look seems to impress a lot of women that support you. What’s your thoughts about that? Is that a strategy or is it simply just natural?
ColdKid: Haha I appreciate that, but it’s just my style. I look the way I want, and I can only be thankful if the women rock with it. It’s not a strategy, but I have noticed that it’s helped me in more way than one. The only problem is, I don’t want to be that artist that’s praised for his looks over his content. If I was all about looks then I wouldn’t put the time into my songwriting like I do. Shout out all my female fans, who rock with me for my music, though.
SPARX: You’ve released two mixtapes in the past few months. ‘Henny & Sprite’ and ‘Homesick’. Describe the emotions and energy put into those mixtapes.
ColdKid: Henny & Sprite was more of a sorry for the wait type project I had put together in about two weeks, with the help of my homie Benzo. I basically took a bunch of tracks that didn’t make Homesick, and threw a few beats from popular artists together and called it a Mixtape. Homesick had been in the making for almost two years and went through close to 50 track changes until I found my true sound that put it together. When I first started making music, I knew I wanted to make something dark, and that people could more so vibe too. Looking at my old shit compared to now, you see the change. It’s all the dark emotions I’ve been wanting to portray.
SPARX: The title ‘Henny & Sprite’ [laughs] who was the one to come up with the name?
ColdKid: Haha that came from Benzo & I. Everybody these days sippin’ syrup, and we wanted to put our own potion into the mix with Hennessy & Sprite. A lot of my music gets made off that mixture, so I’m praying for that Hennessy endorsement one uh these days haha.
SPARX: ‘Homesick’ is perfect as it gives those who don’t know you a little insight and like the title do you feel homesick about the history you have in your hometown?
ColdKid: Homesick was all about putting my past experiences back home into perspective, as well as how much I miss where I’m from. It’s a mixture of both past and more recent experiences from both territories. As much bad shit that I went through where I’m from, I wanted to make it clear that I’m more thankful it happened so that I could put them into a positive outlet for someone who’s been through the same things. I knew my people back home would feel it, but I tried to write the music in a way that people from different cities could still relate. I dedicate it to anyone who’s ever felt lost, just tryna find themselves through trial and error. Some songs speak violence, others speak hope. It’s all shit I felt at different times, but I dealt with it through poetry. That’s how I hoped to inspire others who felt the same.
