Matt Damon ‘Bourne’ Sequel Official Release Date

The 2016 summer shuffle continues: Universal Pictures has nudged back by two weeks the release of its next Jason Bourne movie, which will reunite leading man Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass.

Back in September it was reported, that Matt Damon is reuniting with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass for a new Jason Bourne sequel. Nothing is known about the story at this point, and it isn’t clear if there is even a screenwriter attached, but Matt Damon confirmed in November that the project will be released in 2016. The sequel must be moving along smoothly, though, for Universal to only push the sequel back two weeks.

The yet-untitled film will now arrive July 29, 2016, filling the date just vacated by Fox’s next “Planet of the Apes” movie. On its previous release date of July 15, the fifth “Bourne” adventure would have matched up against the animated tale “Ice Age 5” and come one week after the recently slated “Star Trek 3.”

The “Bourne” sequel’s new calendar spot pits it against the Fox comedy “Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates” and gives it a one-week jump on Warner Bros.’ star-studded supervillain team-up “Suicide Squad,” starring Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie.

The cascade of recent scheduling announcements and adjustments underscores how, in a Hollywood increasingly reliant on film franchises and summer tent-poles, even the smallest calendrical changes can have ripple effects.
