“Struggle is proof that you haven’t been conquered, that you refuse to surrender, that victory is still possible, and that you’re growing.”  ― Jon Walden

Writing and reveling in the hip-hop genre of music at the age of 9, the now 21 year old grew up listening to a lot of east coast hip-hop such as Nas, Noreaga, Capone, Gangstarr, and Biggie as well as dabbling west coast and southern hip-hop in Cincinnati, Ohio. With a troubling life that he and his friends began to experience together, his life started to take a turn. The more people he hang around would start to turn to drugs and theft to get by. Although his father and mother have gone through tough times to along with the lost of his uncle due to unfortunate circumstances his focus on writing music again fueled a want to give something that other could relate to. Coming out the rut he was for roughly 7 to 8 years his love life became an avenue that took his mind off the burdens that bared on his being. No matter his baggage she would only like determine her love for him through other attributes. After almost a year and a half they would break up, which reignited his passion to write music. Now residing in Florida and writing his truly dedicated release entitled ‘Homesick’ CK mindset is going far like he wants it to be. He wants nothing more then, to explain his life that he lived in the past, and his future.

We caught up with the ‘Real & Cold’ rapper himself to answer a few questions we had left about his accomplishments, where he got started, and more:

Q: What is your name, and name your group/band/act?

 “ColdKid/CK”

Q: Where are you from? How did you get your name?

I’m was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Now living in Bradenton, FL.

My name first came about from a tattoo I have on my hand saying “Cold Soul”. A lot of my music has to do with overcoming struggle/Growing cold to the world. A homie of mine and I took Cold and thought Kid would be a nice fit to finish it off. ColdKid has been the name ever since.

Q: How would you describe your music for the public audience?

Dark, honest, melancholic. A mix of Modern Hip Hop with an Old School influence. I know a lot of people perceive my music in a different way, but I really try to tell a story with most of my songs. Most of my music is personal, but I also like to write about things I’ve seen, or the people around me. I try to focus on things your average rapper wouldn’t talk about.

Q: Thinking back to early childhood, what was your first experience with music like? What song do you remember most as a child?

I grew up in a heavily religious home. My parents didn’t want me listening to secular Hip Hop, so I remember hiding old 2Pac and Ja Rule Cd’s throughout my room. For as long as I can remember, music has always come first in my life. I remember my favorite track was Gin & Juice by Snoop. That shit is a classic.

Q: As a child growing up, music surrounds us: what type of music did you hear the most back then? How does it differ from what you listen to now?

In my opinion, the best music was produced during the 90’s- Early 2000’s. Not just Hip Hop, but every Genre. I remember listening to illmatic as a kid, and just picturing the words play out as a story in my head. Like a movie. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve noticed that most lyrical content is dumbed down, while the main focus of the song is now the beat. So we’ve got artists writing out some simple ass lyrics, over a complex ass beat. It’s all about being catchy and feeding into that mainstream formula of what’s cool at the time. Not saying it’s not okay, because I understand that music is ever changing. I just hope to see more lyricists in the future.

Q: What was the first song that you ever sang? How did it make you feel?

First song I had ever put written and put together was a song called “Lvcifer”. I wrote it during a dark time in my life, so it had a lot to do with suicide and inner conflict. It started out as a poem, but I ended up turning it into a song when I first started making music.

Q: What made you first realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?

What really made me want to chase it was after I had showed my music to my Homies, and family back home. They all were pretty shocked what I had come up with, and encouraged me to keep going. After a while a lot of people in my city started catching on. I felt like I could maybe get somewhere with it, so here I am. Chasing dreams.

Q: How did you become involved in the type of music you play/sing now?

Pure influence. I grew up with Hip Hop, and I grew up living what I write. My music is a product of influence.

Q: If you had to describe your music in three or four words, what would you call it?

Dark, Inspired, Hopeful.  I just call it Hip Hop.

Q: What are you songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)

Most of my songs are about Drugs, Love loss, and Inner Conflicts. I grew up in a broke city, so I’ve seen a lot of my friends and family get wrapped up in addiction to cope. My teenage years were mostly spent trying to get by. So most of my music tells that story of the inner struggles, as well as outer struggles I’ve been through, and still going through. You’ll see a lot of Aggressive, Depressed, and sometimes suicidal  themes in my music. It’s all for a better purpose though. Not to condone those thoughts. Just a way to vent them.

Q: What do you feel distinguishes “an artist” from just a musician?

An artist has a way of making people feel through what they’ve created. A musician can give you something to tap your foot to, but a true artist can draw emotion from you with their work. That’s the difference in my opinion.

Q: As an artist, how would you define SUCCESS?

I think the greatest success as an artist is to inspire and change lives. I think music is an incredibly necessary part of what makes us the people that we are. You look at an artist like Pac, and you see how much their music continues to move people, even after death. When an artist can take their craft and help people, or give them something to relate their lives to, that’s true success in my book.

Q: What do you think makes you and your type of music unique from other artists?

Not saying that I’m the only one making meaningful music these days, but I think I’m one of the few to do it in a way that I have. I’m trying to combine a few different styles all into one that I can call my own. I want to make music that everyone can rock with, not just Hip Hop heads. I’m also one of the few artists coming out of Queen City, so I think people will see we have our own style.

Q: How do you think you would like to be remembered by everyone if something were to happen to you suddenly?

I want to be remembered for my words, and for my music. I’m trying to leave this world with something that can shape a more positive future. Whether it be 10 years after I’m gone, or a century. I want to be the type of artist that people respect for the person I was, and not how much financial success I was blessed with.

Q: As an artist, is there anything special you hope to be able to accomplish?

I hope to meet and work with the artists I grew up listening to. I want to tour and spread my message. worldwide. I want to create a flavor of music that hasn’t been done yet. I don’t want to be on a Kanye or Bieber level, but I want to be known. If this rap shit can make me some cash, I just want enough for me and my people to live comfortably. It’s all about giving back. I’ll keep grinding, we’ll see where it gets me.

Q: You want to give a few words of your own you want the fans to know?

I just want to thank my Family and all my homies back home for supporting my dreams. Shoutout to all the people I’m working with these days. Shoutout Melrose, Ques, and C-Rob. Thank you to anyone who’s rocking with me, and fueling my hunger to keep moving.  Thank you Sparx for this opportunity to show the people what I’m about. God Bless
