When Avatar was released in 2009, it brought with it a new era of spectacular 3D movies. It had a huge budget, but managed to become the first film ever to gross over $2 billion. Avatar also introduced fans to the world of Pandora.
With that level of success, many would expect a sequel to follow quickly, but while writer and director James Cameron has confirmed that there will be an Avatar 2, 3 & 4 – none have even started filming yet, and the plot is being kept under wraps.
So what do we know about the Avatar sequels?
Explore Pandora – The Underwater World of Avatar 2
James Cameron is a huge environmentalist and an admirer of the natural world. he went so far as to build a one man vessel which took him to explore the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest place in the oceans. He became only the 3rd person in human history to ever go so deep.
And it is expected that in the upcoming Avatar sequels we will see some of the underwater world of Pandora, too.
At first Cameron said that his idea was to explore other worlds in the same solar system as Pandora, giving each of the a different environment. His work exploring the more sci-fi areas of our planet, however, convinced him that he could do everything he wanted within the world of Pandora.
He disputed that the entire second movie would take place underwater, however, stating:
There are underwater scenes and surface-water scenes having to do with indigenous ocean cultures that are distributed across the three films.
What can we expect from Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington’s characters?
At the end of Avatar, Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully had given up his place among the humans and joined the Na’vi, after falling in love with Zoe Saldana as Neytiri.
And, especially after Zoe Saldana’s great performance as the deadly alien Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, fans are eager to know what will happen to Jake and Neytiri.
And James Cameron has confirmed that they are the film’s focal point. He pointed out that the first movie was very “Jake-centric”, adding:
We spread it around quite a bit more as we go forward. It’s really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like ‘The Godfather.’
Does that mean we’ll see the movies spread across time, seeing the struggles of different generations? It would certainly be an interesting move.
Avatar 2, 3 & 4: What will happen?
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana aren’t the only familiar faces we expect to see in the upcoming trilogy of Avatar movies – also expected to return are Sigourney Weaver and Steven Lang.
These two are a bit of a surprise, especially as both of their characters died at the end of Avatar. So how will they reappear? Well, the simple answer is, as Sigourney Weaver explained: “no one ever dies in Science Fiction”.
There has been some speculation though this movie could see Steven Lang’s Miles Quaritch come back, his vital organs preserved in a high technology exoskeleton. This would make a clear distinction between the fallen, technology-corrupted humans, and the nature loving Na’vi of Pandora.
The focus of Avatar 2 and it’s sequels will probably once again focus on the RDA (Resources Development Administration) as they seek to extract resources from the bounteous utopia of Pandora, possibly from their oceans.
It will be interesting to see also though, now that jake has had some time living with the Na’vi, whether he has been able to teach them some humans skills, and whether – as in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – the innocent creatures begin to resemble their persecutors more as they fight against them.
But what are you most looking forward to seeing in the next Avatar movie, as well as Avatar 3 & 4? Zoe Salanda? The underwater world and volcanoes of Pandora? Or something completely different? Write in with your thought below.
