Rock N’ Roll is the true love of anime and FLCL has returned with the true love of this dynamic duo.
FLCL arrived on the Adult Swim in the mid-2000s as it added that diverse and wacky humor some animes could provide. You had the relationship of a young boy by name of Naota, who’s often critical of his family and friends being thrown out of whack when an eccentrically strange woman named Haruko who burst on the scene offering a new way of life but with a twist. Every time Naota and Haruko are around each other the strangest visitors make their presence known and from out of the unusual places possible… Naota’s forehead. After 16 years of ending the first season, there are plans for two new seasons. The news broke from the American anime newspaper Anime News Network reported that the production studio Production I.G. is planning a remake of the popular series after announcing their purchase of the rights to FLCL from production company Gainax.
Another added note is both seasons will consist of 6-episodes (per season) as Adult Swim has confirmed it and will begin airing in 2018. Many fans were concerned about the revival but an Adult Swim representative provided some insight on the new seasons of FLCL,
“The original FLCL is an anime classic and has been a fixture on Adult Swim since we first laid eyes on it,” said Jason DeMarco, senior vice president/creative director, Adult Swim On-Air in a press release. “I’m beyond thrilled to be able to produce a sequel with the original creators, for Toonami, where it belongs.“
The President, CEO, and Co-founder of Production I.G., Mitsuhisa Ishikawa also gave a few words about its return,
“FLCL has become an anime classic over the years, yet it has remained vibrant. This new season will capture the hearts of both longtime FLCL fans from around the world and new anime viewers.“
It’s been a long time coming as the newest installment of FLCL has exited the cult-like fan base who truly enjoy the dynamic relationship between Naota and Haruko. During this year’s Anime Expo the wait is over for any kind of wondering about FLCL as the fans got a look at the series’ second and third seasons. The teasers showcase a few familiar faces with Naota and Haruko shown front-and-center reuniting for a new adventure. The truly also provides a different approach from Production I.G. and its intriguing fluid animation style. We also see the trailer confirming the return of The Pillows coming back for the soundtrack. Anyone who watched the first season of FLCL knows that the Japanese rock group defined the series with its aggressive beats and fans are excited about their return.
Here’s the synopsis for FLCL season 2:
“In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.“
