After Jurassic World broke Marvel’s The Avengers’ three-year opening weekend box office record this June with a whopping $208.8 million, most fans knew that the announcement of a sequel was just around the corner. One month later, Jurassic World 2 was formally announced, with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard reprising their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, and Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow co-writing the script with Derek Connolly.
During The Hollywood Reporter’s annual executive roundtable session, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley revealed that Colin Trevorrow is actually developing an entire trilogy with executive producer Steven Spielberg.
Here’s what the executive had to say, when asked if they will have trouble hitting the previously-announced June 22, 2018 release date.
“There’s no reason why we should [have trouble]. [Director] Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline. He’s been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It’s a happy surprise.”
Shortly before Jurassic World, Colin Trevorrow revealed he would not be back to direct Jurassic World 2, but he still wants to be involved in the franchise in some way. Universal still hasn’t announced who will direct the follow-up, but we know that Colin Trevorrow will be journeying to a galaxy far, far away, since it was announced in August that he will take the helm on Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Episode IX. It isn’t known how far along Colin Trevorrow is on the script for Jurassic World 2, or if he plans on writing Jurassic World 3 as well.
The filmmaker teased in August that Jurassic World 2 will take the story off Isla Nublar, and will focus on other companies developing weaponized dinosaur technology. These themes were already hinted at in Jurassic World, largely through Vincent D’Onofrio’s character Hoskins, who often talks about the potential to turn the raptors trained by Owen Grady into weapons. In another interview from September, Colin Trevorrow teased that he had so much product placement in Jurassic World to set up the sequels and different aspects of corporate greed.
It still hasn’t been confirmed if other Jurassic World stars such as Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson and Jake Johnson will be back for the sequel. With Jurassic World 2 set for a 2018 release, we might be able to expect Jurassic World 3 in either 2020 or 2021, but we’re still a long ways away from both projects coming to fruition. Are you excited that a trilogy is being developed around Jurassic World?
Jurassic World was released June 12th, 2015. Jurassic World 2 comes to theaters June 22nd, 2018.
