Robert Downey Jr. Teases ‘Spider-Man’ In ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Nearing the end of the global pre-release press tour for Avengers: Age of Ultron, the cast of Marvel’s latest (and biggest) release are back Stateside for the film’s May 1st North America theatrical release, and on Thursday, Robert Downey Jr. was the special guest on The Late Show With David Letterman promoting the film.

This was the star’s first video appearance since walking out on an interview with London’s Channel 4 News where interviewer Krishnan Guru-Murthy spent much of their time asking RDJ off-topic personal questions, and despite that awkward event, he couldn’t have been in higher spirits two days later.

From posing for fans and cameras while arriving at New York City’s Ed Sullivan Theatre, to sharing smiles and laughs with The Late Show’s host, fans watching can only smile at RDJ’s first response to Letterman asking about returning to the role of Tony Stark again after Avengers 2 for next year’s Captain America: Civil War.

“I can’t stop doing these movies. I love ‘em!,” RDJ quipped before answering a series of Marvel movie questions. The poster boy of Marvel Cinematic Universe, celebrating his 50th birthday earlier this month, states that he begins shooting Captain America 3 in a couple weeks, reiterating what was revealed by Marvel Studios bus Kevin Feige when we spoke with him two weeks ago at the Avengers: Age of Ultron junket.

Responding to whether or not he’s going to win the hero vs. hero battle against Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, RDJ responded, “well, it’s called Captain America: Civil War [Laughs].”  And when asked if Spider-Man is going to be in the film:

“He may well be, yeah. I hear they’re looking to cast a new Spider-Man.”

After that, Letterman asked RDJ who fans should cheer for in Cap 3, and the star looked into the camera and gave the politically correct answer, “that’s up to the people,” before smirking and then pointing to himself. As Tony Stark would.

If you didn’t already consider it all-but-officially confirmed that Spider-Man will be inCaptain America: Civil War, you can count on it. You can also expect to hear who’s playing Peter Parker in the next few weeks as Civil War begins shooting in Atlanta in a matter of days.

Fun fact: It was on The Late Show With David Letterman in October when RDJ first hinted at a big imminent Marvel movie announcement about him returning for more movies. Just days later Marvel Studios confirmed his involvement in Captain America: Civil War while unveiling all of their Phase 3 movie plans.

Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine, Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill and Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron releases in theaters on May 1 2015, followed by Ant-Man on July 17 2015, Captain America: Civil War on May 6 2016, Doctor Strange on November 4 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5 2017, Spider-Man on July 28, 2017, Thor: Ragnarok on November 3 2017, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 on May 4 2018, Black Panther on July 6 2018, Captain Marvel on November 2 2018, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 on May 3 2019 and Inhumans on July 12, 2019.
