Are There Wild Dinosaurs On Isla Nublar?

A new “Jurassic World” viral site shows off a bunch of new images and highlights the fictional company that finally brought a successful Jurassic Park to Isla Nublar. And while there’s plenty of fun new material to check out on the official Masrani corporate website, one detail in particular stuck out to me. Up until now the fate of the existing dinosaurs on Isla Nublar was unknown.

As early as “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” John Hammond had been talking up the possibility of treating Isla Sorna, the secondary “Jurassic Park” island, like a nature preserve. Presumably Isla Nublar has been extended the same protection. How the new Jurassic Park, “Jurassic World,” dealt with the wild animals before the events of “Jurassic World” was previously unknown, but I really hoped flamethrowers would be involved somehow. Now we have a better idea of what was done with the Isla Nublar dinosaurs, and it may turn our understanding of “Jurassic World” on its head.

Masrani Global – The Company Behind ‘Jurassic World’

The Masrani Global website not only has a glowing profile of Henry Wu (B.D. Wong returning to his role from “Jurassic Park”) that expounds on his work building hybrid species (the research basis for the “Jurassic World” D-Rex), but also confirms that dinosaur wildlife continued to thrive on Isla Nublar after the events of “Jurassic Park.”

According to the profile: “Dr. Henry Wu returned to Isla Nublar in November of 1994 to assist the clean up teams in cataloging specimen numbers, and to identify exactly how the animals were breeding.” But the presence of “clean up teams” doesn’t mean that dinosaurs have been erased from the Isla Nublar ecosystem.

Now we have to deal with QR codes on our dinosaur eggs!?

Wild Dinosaurs on Isla Nublar?

“Simon Masrani used subsidaries Axis Boulder Engineering and Timack Construction to work on the preparation and planning prior to construction on the island. Construction workers were protected from native wildlife by InGen security over the course of the three years from 2002 until completion in 2004. With over $1.2 billion alone spent in concrete and building materials, this project was never underestimated.”

After construction “Jurassic World” opened in 2005 “to an incredible 98,120 visitors in the first month of operation.”

Did you catch that? They didn’t kill off the native wildlife. Instead Masrani built a super secure complex, a walled off fortress on the island. This was previously hinted at in the exclusive “Jurassic World” Comic-Con poster:

Here we see a velociraptor still thriving as “Jurassic World” appears to be under construction in the background. But now we know that Masrani never bothered to take back the island. It is still loaded with very deadly dinosaur wildlife.

What Does This Mean For ‘Jurassic World’?

So what does this mean for the plot of “Jurassic World”? At the very least the reveal that native wildlife exists on Isla Nublar changes the mentality behind the park. It’s not a simple case of dinosaurs in cages escaping, but there is instead a nested reality, with humans enclosed in walls to keep them safe from the outside dinosaurs, while observing encaged dinosaurs. It may not factor explicitly in the plot at all. However, it certainly does raise the stakes. Now there is not only the possibility of dinosaurs like the D-Rex escaping, but the additional reality of a hostile environment waiting just outside the walls. The downfall of the park in “Jurassic World” may be even messier than previously suspected.
