WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event: Match Predictions and Preview

Credit: WWE

The iconic WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event returns tomorrow night with the promise to deliver an electrifying night. With a stacked card, potential surprises, and high stakes, the event is poised to captivate fans and set the stage for the future as we head into the new year for one of WWE’s most anticipated years. Here’s a breakdown of the matches and predictions for WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Undisputed WWE Championship – Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Kevin Owens

The main event pits Cody Rhodes against Kevin Owens for the Undisputed WWE Championship. Their once-strong friendship has crumbled into a bitter rivalry, with Owens feeling personally betrayed by Cody Rhodes. Fans captured Owens’ brutal attack on Rhodes in the Bad Blood parking lot after the event. Owens’ resentment stems from Rhodes temporarily partnering with Roman Reigns. Owens perceives this as a betrayal, given that Reigns’ actions have caused significant chaos for numerous others in the locker room. Despite Owens’ reasoning, Rhodes’ motivation is deeply personal, as he seeks retribution for Owens’ removal of Randy Orton, whom he views as a mentor. Owens would sideline Orton with a dangerous piledriver, a move that the company banned due to its high risk of injury.

Prediction: Cody Rhodes retains the championship after a hard-fought battle. Owens’ ruthlessness will make this a war, but Rhodes’ determination to honor Orton and prove himself as a resilient champion will carry him to victory.

Sami Zayn vs. Drew McIntyre

This is another personal situation. Sami Zayn would challenge Seth “Freakin” Rollins to a match after accusing the latter of attacking Jey Uso backstage, during which Zayn and Jey interacted with CM Punk prior to the attack. Following Zayn’s defeat in the match, Drew McIntyre launched a Claymore attack on Sami Zayn, which was McIntyre’s finishing move. During this past week’s Monday Night RAW, McIntyre asserted that Zayn and Jey Uso’s actions reinforced his mistrust in people’s capacity to change, which is why he harbored this grudge. Zayn, never one to back down, would apologize to Seth Rollins for accusing him of attacking Jey and subsequently challenge Drew McIntyre to a match this Saturday.

Prediction: Drew McIntyre wins. Zayn’s heart and resilience will shine, but McIntyre’s newfound aggression and focus make him more dangerous than ever. This will undoubtedly have a significant impact on McIntyre, potentially pushing him back into the title picture.

World Heavyweight Championship – Gunther (c) vs. Finn Bálor vs. Damien Priest

The World Heavyweight Championship match promises to be explosive, with all three participants engaged in a heated exchange. Gunther has been able to defeat Damien Priest in two title matches, due in part to Finn Bálor’s interference (SummerSlam and Survivor Series: WarGames). Balor and Priest were once partners in the Judgment Day, but their relationship soured when Balor intervened in Priest’s match against Gunther. After all of this, Balor would try to make it known that he wants the World Heavyweight Championship, and Gunther wants Balor after being attacked; however, Balor would push the issue with Priest, forcing Adam Pearce to add Priest to the match, setting up this triple threat match.

Prediction: Gunther will retain the championship. His main focus will be to take both Priest and Balor out. The animosity between Priest and Balor could potentially hinder their chances of winning the title. Not to mention the current power struggle between Balor and Liv that could cause further issues.

Women’s World Championship – Liv Morgan (c) vs. Iyo Sky

Iyo Sky earned her shot at the Women’s World Championship after winning a battle royale on an episode of Monday Night RAW. However, there seems to be a little focus on how Rhea and Liv will finish their storied rivalry. Sky’s technical prowess and innovative offense make her a formidable challenger, so you can’t count her out. After this week’s Monday Night RAW, depicting Rhea and Sky grabbing the Women’s World Championship, teased a potential new wrench in the Rhea/Liv rivalry. BUT let’s not forget the absolute tear Liv Morgan has been on as champion with her muscle, Raquel Rodriquez, and Dominic Mysterio.

Prediction: BOLD! Iyo Sky will win the title. Her momentum and recent victories position her as the next big star in the women’s division.

Women’s United States Championship – Chelsea Green vs. Michin

Last month, SmackDown GM Nick Aldis introduced the Women’s United States Championship to expand the division’s hard work and dedication to their craft in the ring. The semi-final matches between Bayley and Chelsea Green, and Tiffany Stratton and Michin, took place prior to the event on Saturday. At the end of the night, both fan favorites, Chelsea Green and Michin, won their respective matches, advancing to the Women’s United States Championship Tournament Finals.

Prediction: Chelsea Green will walk out of Saturday Night’s Main Event as the inaugural Women’s United States Champion. Her personality speaks to what a WWE Superstar is, and despite not getting victories over her opponents until the tournament, her wins have translated to the way the WWE Universe has treated her this past year. Don’t get me wrong, Michin has had a great resurgence in her career this year and will become champion someday, but it’s Green’s time to shine.

However, what I also see is Tiffany Stratton potentially cashing in on the contract to win the Women’s United States Championship. She is creating history at Saturday Night’s Main Event, securing the new championship, and advancing her career. There have been rumors that a significant title change will occur during the event, and this could be the pivotal moment.

There’s no doubt that tomorrow night will be a memorable and exciting night. WWE has made significant strides in revitalizing the significance of storytelling in professional wrestling over the past five years.

WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event will be live nationwide on NBC and streaming on Peacock at 8 pm EST/5 pm PST.
