Production company Legendary Pictures and director Gareth Edwards made a bit of splash during the Summer of 2014 with their reboot of the Godzilla franchise, property, and character. Edwards’ film opened to generally favorable reviews from critics and audiences alike, thus prompting Legendary to commit to two future sequels in a planned trilogy, that is currently planned to culminate with a third film in 2020 that is set to pit the King of the Monsters against King Kong in an epic Kaiju event.
As plans for Edwards’ Godzilla 2 continue to unfold, with the 2018 motion picture primed to deliver an even larger cinematic canvas against which a greater world of monsters will be explored, another prominent production company (namely, Toho) is looking to take back and explore the titular property for themselves.
Toho, is the Japanese film studio behind the very original Godzilla film released all the way back in 1954 to theaters around the world, is soon going to release a new feature headlined by the King of Monsters, titled Godzilla: Resurgence. This film will mark the first time in eleven years that a Godzilla movie has been made in its country of origin.
Godzilla: Resurgence is currently slated for a July 2016 theatrical release, with the writer-director duo of Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi of Neon Genesis Evangelion fame working behind the scenes.
Trailer is below:
Given the pedigree behind Toho’s forthcoming production set to feature the King of the Monsters,Godzilla: Resurgence may well please hardcore fans of the Godzilla franchise more than Edwards’ 2014 Hollywood reboot managed to do. With Resurgence set to come out a full two years ahead of Edwards’ forthcoming Godzilla 2, it will at least provide fans of the giant Japanese creature of cinematic legend something to held tide them over, before the U.S. version of the character return to the big screen (and gets ready for another showdown with The Eight Wonder of the World a.k.a. Kong).
Additional projects featuring Anno and Higuchi’s recreation of the famous movie monster have already been planned , thought only time will tell how capably Toho takes back their original feature franchise. If nothing else, it will be exciting to see two film studios working simultaneously on different Godzilla-related films and assorted tie-in productions.
