‘The X-Files’: Do You Still Believe?

News that Fox was reopening The X-Files for a limited series run next year was only confirmed back in March. However, since then, word about the show – which is currently filming in Vancouver – has been ramping up, as the network’s marketing machine has begun to hype up the return of Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully to the airwaves.

A recent teaser gave fans some quick flashes of footage from the new season but offered little in the way of concrete story details. With production ongoing and new cast additions – such as, most recently, the fan-favorite trio known as The Lone Gunmen – still coming in, it may be awhile before Fox gives viewers a more detailed look at the new X-Files.

In the meantime, the network has released another teaser (see below) designed to build awareness and excitement for the six-episode revival series. The footage aired during the season finale of Wayward Pines, a fitting pairing considering that Pines is a mystery sci-fi show centered on a federal agent’s search for the truth…. Hmmmm!

The new teaser looks a whole lot like the previous one – most of it looks like reused footage – except at the end where we get a back-and-forth from Mulder and Scully. “Are you ready for this, Scully?” Mulder says to Scully. To which she responds: “I don’t know that there’s a choice.” Pretty much sums up their entire relationship.

While there’s still not a ton of new material to analyze, the considerable fanbase for The X-Files will likely be onboard regardless, leaving newbies perhaps a bit more curious about the series’ return. Anderson hasteased the “intense” season 10 ahead, and the creative team behind the show – led by series creator Chris Carter – is certainly putting effort into honoring the show’s history.

New cast members like Robbie Amell, Lauren Ambrose and Joel McHale may be coming aboard to keep the show’s narrative fresh (and, likely, more palatable to younger viewers who were too young to watchThe X-Files the first time), but characters like Skinner and the mysterious Cigarette Smoking Man are already back in line to keep the core mythology alive amidst the revival series’ standalone adventures. Without more footage to examine, it’s tough to say exactly where The X-Files is headed. Nevertheless, all signs point to a successful relaunch of one of Fox’s signature programs.

The X-Files revival will begin with a two-night premiere airing Sunday, January 24, 2016 at 10pm on Fox.
