Could ’28 Weeks Later’ Get A Sequel?
The long awaited follow-up to the 2007 horror sequel ’28 Weeks Later’ appears to be finally be in the works, according to screenwriter Alex Garland. The British writer broke the news on January 14, 2015 in an interview with IGN.
Garland, who also penned the scripts for the first film in the series,’28 Days Later’, stated that “We’ve just started talking about it seriously.” “We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it so it is a possibility. It’s complicated. There’s a whole bunch of reasons why it’s complicated, which are boring so I won’t go into, but there’s a possibility.”
’28 Months Later’ was the title naturally predicted by fans of the series and Garland confirmed that it would likely be the official title as well: “It’s more likely to be 28 Months than 28 Years. 28 Years gives you one more place to go.”
Garland also stated that he would likely assume a producing role for the film, as he did for ’28 Weeks Later.’ Daniel Boyle, who directed the previous film, and co-produced the sequel (which was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo) had expressed past interest in returning as director, but Garland didn’t expand upon his involvement.
In less positive news, Garland announced that a sequel to ‘Dredd’ the 2012 reboot of the ‘Judge Dredd’ franchise which he also penned, is unlikely due to the original’s poor box office: “It makes me feel sad really. I feel grateful to the people who’ve attempted to get a sequel off the ground…the reward would have been at the end of it that it all worked out. But it didn’t all work out. That’s the reality.’
’28 Days Later’ helped spawn the 21st century zombie film, which sped up the undead (or ‘”infected” per their storyline), so the unexpected gap between films has been a curious point of conversation between horror fans. We’ll just have to wait and see how things develop. Garland is currently promoting his directorial debut ‘Ex Machina’, set for release on January 23, 2015.
