WWE: Jim Ross Thoughts On ‘The Authority’ Angle
On this week’s episode of “WWE Monday Night Raw,” the evil faction of The Authority took a hit when Randy Orton attacked them and they effectively took him out of action as a result. Orton was the original member of the group, which is led by co-owner Stephanie McMahon and WWE COO Triple H, so this was a way to kick him out of the group. However, there were hints that there could be more coming. In Jim Ross’ blog post on Tuesday, the WWE Hall of Fame star said he thinks it is time to end The Authority.
The cracks started when Vince McMahon returned to open “WWE Monday Night Raw” and made a stipulation for “Survivor Series” that mandated that, if Team Authority loses to Team Cena, then Team Authority is broken up and is no longer in power. Then, when Triple H watched as The Authority beat down his friend Randy Orton, it was Stephanie McMahon who ordered that Orton be taken out.
At the end, Triple H left in frustration while Stephanie McMahon looked happy about the beat down. This was an interesting segment because Triple H and Randy Orton go back a long ways and it was clear that Triple H didn’t want this to happen. It was also great writing to have Orton ask Triple H what he would do if he were in his shoes. It almost looks like The Authority could be headed for a split, and Jim Ross pointed out the great idea of having friction between Triple H and Stephanie McMahon add something new.
The evil authority figure has been around wrestling for many, many years and it might be playing itself out. It almost seems like a lazy plot device now and could use something to freshen it up. If the angles just continue with authority figures making the face’s life a living hell, there is nothing new to see. Jim Ross has been around professional wrestling for a long time and he has a good point when he said that the authority figure angle might have finally run its course.
