Prince Slays the Jam Set On SNL
It’s a rare treat in these digital times to see television history unfold on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” That’s exactly what happened shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, at 12:06 a.m. to be precise. Musical guest Prince performed an unprecedented eight-minute straight jam set of exclusive album tracks. In the show’s 40 seasons all other guest artists went by the strict standard two 4-minute sets. If they wanted Prince on their show they had to go by his terms.
Could this become a possibility for future bands and other soloists who want to appear on “SNL?” Only time will tell. It proved to be a stroke of genius. This was reminiscent of another late-night rock music show from the 1970s on NBC called “The Midnight Special.” It featured many live acts, in addition to the commonly accepted practice of lip-synching. When artists performed live it was a real treat to see them jam in extended performances just like what was seen with Prince.
The “Saturday Night Live” mini concert was not a greatest hits festival, instead he was there promoting his own “Art Official Age” album. His backing band of all female musicians, 3rdEyeGirl, were promoting their new LP, “Plectrumelectrum,” featuring Prince.
He opened the historic set with “Clouds” from his latest album, and mirrored his album cover down to the three-spec sunglasses. Featured vocalist Lianne LaHavas was front and center, while the Purple One played keyboards as a duo.
In true concert style Prince grabbed his guitar to take center stage for the second medley of “Marz.” Closing out with “Anotherlove,” was in true classic rock style, a bona fide guitar jam by the pioneer of the Minneapolis sound that left the audience and television viewers wanting more.
Prince did not partake in filming of the “SNL” promo featuring the host and musical guest together. He was not seen at the end of the program when host Chris Rock thanked the cast, musical guest, and staff. Lianne LaHavas and 3rdEyeGirls were there in lieu of Prince.
