It was 1997 when the hip hop ladies anthem “Not Tonight Remix (Ladies Night)”, featuring the late Left Eye (TLC;) Missy Elliott; Da Brat and radio personality Angie Martinez, was released off the Lil Kim “Hardcore” album. Next month, according to a report released by Centric TV on Oct. 27, hip hop lovers get the opportunity to see some of these ladies reunite live on stage to perform this hit single at the 2014 Soul Train Awards.
According to Centric, so far Lil Kim, Missy Elliott and Da Brat are all confirmed performers for the awards show set to take place on Nov. 7 in Las Vegas. No reports have been released confirming that former Hot 97 radio personality Angie Martinez will also join the ladies on stage; nor has it been released that someone will cover the late Left Eye’s verse on the song.
This is guaranteed to be an epic performance and an even more epic night with performances that highlight a specific era of music – the 90s. In addition to these ladies taking the stage, 90s R&B group Jodeci have also been confirmed, as well as rapper-turned pastor-turned rapper again, Mase.
Centric spoke with Paxton Baker, Centric’s General Manager and Executive Vice President, who said in a statement: “We are keeping the momentum going with hit-making musical acts from different decades and are thrilled Missy Elliott, Lil Kim and Da Brat chose Soul Train Awards 2014 for their reunion.”
Centric and BET are sister networks and are both setting the bar pretty high with these fabulous performances during their awards shows. Earlier this month, BET reunited the queens of Hip Hop, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Yo Yo for the 90s remix of Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down” for the BET Hip Hop Awards. The performance brought the audience to their feet with excitement to see the ladies together again. This upcoming performance with Lil Kim, Da Brat and Missy Elliott is guaranteed to gain the same reaction from fans.
It’s a wonderful feeling to take a stroll down a musical memory lane every once in a while. Especially when the single was a hit, as reported by Vibe, and achieved platinum success for Lil’ Kim, becoming her third consecutive number one single on the Billboard chart.
The 2014 Soul Train Awards won’t only be about the 90s, but will also highlight music from the 60s, 70s and 80s by honoring R&B/Funk group Kool and the Gang. Centric reports they are “humbled to honor Kool & the Gang with the Legend Award this year.” Kool and the Gang have release music that continues to be sampled today by artist like, Amerie, A Tribe Called Quest and Eric B and Rakim.
Nov. 30 will definitely be a night to remember when the 2014 Soul Train Awards airs at 8p EST on both Centric and BET.
