The Celtics said in a release that Rondo broke his hand “as a result of a fall at his home on [Thursday night].” The team said he underwent a successful procedure for a left metacarpal fracture (the metacarpal bones connect the fingers to the wrist).
ESPN is reporting the injury occurred when Rondo slipped in the shower and hit his hand on the wall.
As pointed out by Michael Gallagher of NBC Sports, a recovery time of eight weeks would sideline Rondo for the first nine or 10 games of the season, potentially including a showdown with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 11. If he’s out just six weeks, he’ll miss three or four games.
