It was rather shocking to see Death Note get an American adaptation but even interesting to see the famed series get picked up by Netflix. During 2006, Death Note quickly became a pop culture sensation in the States for its raw approach of the storyline and most importantly the development of the characters involved. Main characters Light Yagami, L, and Ryuk became the series’ favorites among those viewing for their unique personalities that drove the story until the climactic ending. For those familiar with the anime the Shinigami’s appearance in the human world added an interesting twist as the only ones who touched the Death Note were able to see them in their physical appearance. Ryuk—the Shinigami that travels with Light throughout the series—quickly became beloved for his empty expressions, his personality of being intrigued by humans, and his lust for apples as he describes them as “Juicy!”
With the American Death Note adaptation premiering towards the end of the summer it’s interesting to note that this version of Death Note will take a different approach than the anime. This was shown in the trailer that was released a month ago only showing a glimpse at the Shinigami and his creepiness. This week as Ryuk (Willem Dafoe) joined Twitter where the Shinigami began to harass director Adam Wingard to reveal the poster for the American Death Note.
