To call Attack on Titan a hit anime series would be quite the understatement. The series based on Hajime Isayama’s equally-as-popular manga kicked off a worldwide phenomena. Specifically, one that has since spawned novels, video games, untold amounts of merchandise, a pair of live action features, and soon a companion live action television series.
That first of two feature films – titled Shingeki No Kyojin, which is very loosely translated to Attack on Titan – will open in Japan on August 1st. Currently there are no plans for a U.S. release, but again, considering its worldwide popularity there’s a good likelihood the film will at least come stateside with a home media release.
Within the world of Attack on Titan, humanity is forced to live in giant walled cities in order to survive a world now dominated by ravenous giants – the Titans. To combat this threat the military is outfitted with 3D maneuver gear that allows them to quickly navigate around Titans and attack their one weak spot: the nape of their neck.
This trailer does offer a fantastic look at a frightening Titan attacking the wall – a crucial scene straight from the manga/anime – but what it doesn’t show is any of the characters utilizing their 3DMG. When it comes to animation, it’s fairly easy to show humans flipping and flying à la Spider-Man, but those sorts of gravity-defying physics are more difficult to realize in live-action.
However, what this trailer lacks in 3DMG spectacle, it more than makes up for in chaos and destruction – the call signs of a Titan attack. And keeping in mind the movie was filmed on Hashima Island – an abandoned island off southern Japan that also appeared Skyfall – the production didn’t have to hold back when it came to blowing things up.
In addition to the new trailer, a few more posters have released as well. Check them out below:
