The Captain America franchise is shaping up to feature the iconic Civil War storyline and many new villains to face the patriotic hero. Out doing promotional work for Australian thriller “The Mule,” actor Hugo Weaving was asked about potentially returning to the role of Red Skull whom he played in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”.
In the past, Weaving has not expressed interest in returning which has not really been an issue. Yet as time has gone on, rumors about the Red Skull character returning to screens in some form or another have gathered steam. There is even wild speculation that Daniel Bruhl‘s mysterious villain character in the upcoming “Captain America: Civil War” might be Red Skull in some way.
There are no official details on who he will play, the only information released was this statement by Marvel’s Kevin Feige: “With Daniel’s ability to deliver intense, nuanced performances, we knew we had found yet another great actor to share the screen with some of our biggest heroes.”
Asked about his potential return in either ‘Civil War’ or other Marvel films, Weaving told THR last week: “I have absolutely no idea. I haven’t talked to anyone about it, so, yeah, we’ll just have to wait and see. No idea at all.”
He then went on to further clarify those remarks this weekend, telling IAmRogue:
“You never know what might or might not happen. But my views have not really changed. I certainly have not had any conversations with anyone about that. No change at all on that landscape.
I was talking to you about another Matrix, and I doubt that would happen. But there are always circumstances. Certain circumstances do change, and there is always a good reason to revisit or reinvestigate something. It may not be worth following, but it is always good to keep your options open and your mind open.
Having said all of that, I have not really changed my opinion about not wanting to do another Captain America. It was fun to do. It was a very great thing to do in many ways, but I suppose my focus is more likely to be elsewhere, but who knows.”
Marvel has already indicated that “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” Frank Grillo is prepared to return in future Marvel films and will reprise his role of Brock Rumlow, who becomes the villain Crossbones. Grillo himself is keeping quiet though as he says he knows “less then (sic) nothing” about his part in the future Marvel’s cinematic universe.
However, Variety reporter Justin Kroll recently tweeted that the “Kingdom” and “Warrior” actor has a more important role to play in the third “Captain America” film than you might expect. The upcoming film is shaping to be epic as it is suggested it will put from the classic Civil War storyline. In fact, Crossbones may be the film’s primary antagonist.
The film will have Joe and Anthony Russo returning to direct after their first venture with Captain America: The Winter Soldier was so successful. The film is set to be released May 6, 2016.
What do you make of Weaving’s comments? Would you like to see him reprise his role as Red Skull or would you be fine if Marvel decided to go with another actor to take on the character?
