‘Krypton’ The Newest of New TV Shows In Development

Man Of Steel writer/producer David Goyer, who also worked on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, is looking to continue his work in the DC Universe — this time, with a TV show based on Superman’s origins. You know, other than Smallville.

Krypton, a proposed prequel series set on the planet of the same name, is reportedly under development by Goyer. Not much is known about the show at the time, but the show seems designed as a method of capitalizing on the success of FOX’s Gotham, if nothing else. Presumably, it’d be set on Krypton, and maybe even involve some enemies who become important in the Man of Steel’s later life, such as General Zod.

Of course, such a show wouldn’t really be able to follow the same structure as Gotham (i.e., shoehorning the superhero everyone knows into the main cast), since Superman’s birth coincides with the destruction of the planet. But there’s no reason we can’t get a series centered on the House of El, or other Kryptonian threats.

Even if this sounds like a bad idea, at least it’s being developed by someone who knows television. In addition to serving as one of the showrunners for NBC’s Constantine, Goyer is also a producer on Da Vinci’s Demons. Goyer, who is also a writer on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and its Justice League sequels, could be looking to further flesh out this particular take on the DC Universe.

That said, pulling this off will be a tall order, since any show set on Krypton will need a pretty hefty budget to convincingly render Krypton as a physical place. This series doesn’t strike me as a particularly great idea, but it’s worth exploring concepts like these. You never know where the next big hit will come from, and in the declining days of traditional television, risks like this are worth taking.
